Real Relief for Tulsa Sciatic Pain

When you're in agony from the hips down, everyday life becomes all but impossible. You can't work, you can't pick up your child, you can't even put on your socks! That's the problem you face every time you're hit with yet another bout of the common but dreaded syndrome known as sciatica. A pinched sciatic nerve or sciatic nerve root can cause everything from leg and lower back pain to loss of muscle strength that affects your balance and stability. But you don't have to turn to surgery to solve this problem -- not when you can get safe, non-invasive Tulsa sciatica treatment here at Cole Chiropractic Clinic.

The Uncomfortable World of Sciatic Nerve Impingement

A big nerve can cause big problems, and this is nowhere more evident than in sciatica. The sciatic nerve is the thickest and longest nerve in the body, extending from the base of the spine deep into the leg. This nerve branches off into all the smaller nerves that relay muscle commands and sensory data to/from the leg and foot. A series of major nerve roots that run through spaces between the lumbar and sacral vertebrae connect the sciatic nerve to the spinal cord. As you might imagine, any condition that impairs this nerve's ability to work can have profound effects on your comfort and function. Impingement of the sciatic nerve or nerve roots may cause:

  • Leg pain (down the back of the leg)
  • Buttock pain
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Tingling or "electric" sensations
  • Loss of sensation in the leg or foot
  • Loss of muscle control that may impair your ability to walk, stand or move confidently

Why does sciatica happen? Degenerative spinal problems such as spondylolisthesis or bulging discs can put pressure on the sciatic nerve roots. Muscle spasms from the nearby piriformis muscle can pinch the sciatic nerve (a phenomenon known as piriformis syndrome). A traumatic accident can force spinal structures out of position so that they press against the sciatic nerve tissue. Even a chronic misalignment or poor posture can make you vulnerable to sciatica.

Diagnosis and Treatment From Our Tulsa Chiropractor

Our Tulsa chiropractor, Dr. Cole, can get to the root of your sciatica symptoms. Once we have isolated the particular nerve roots or other point of impingement, we can provide you with a personalized Tulsa sciatica treatment plan. Chiropractic adjustments can help normalize the positions of spinal structures, taking the pressure off of sensitive nerve tissue. Adjustments that correct your posture can also allow stressed muscles to relax, reducing muscle spasms. Corrective exercises can then help you rebuild weakened muscles, restoring your physical stability and function. Our Tulsa chiropractor may also recommend an ongoing exercise routine to help you retain your improved spinal alignment and support.
